Professional preparation programs that offer specialization in health education/health promotion may apply for program accreditation from one of several sources. They include:
The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredits teacher preparation programs. The American Association for Health Education is the NCATE specialty professional association (SPA) for health education and as such AAHE develops health education teacher education standards and guidelines.
The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredits public health preparation programs at both the graduate and graduate level. Information about the work of CEPH as well as standards and guidelines may be found at www.CEPH.org
Currently an approval process for community health education undergraduate programs also exists called the SOPHE/AAHE Baccalaureate Program Approval Process (SABPAC). This approval process was developed in 1988 and will continue through at least 2010.
Both AAHE and the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) have supported the activities of a National Health Education Accreditation Task Force since 2001. The work of the task force personnel has been reported at www.healthedaccred.org/
