Workshop Descriptions

NASPE offers a menu of certification and in-service professional development options through the Physical Best program.


Certification Workshops
Physical Best Health-Fitness Specialist Certification
Full Day

Intended for both novice and veteran physical educators, this 7-hour workshop is designed to teach participants about the Physical Best program and give them the information and tools to help implement it effectively in their schools.

Time is spent covering the history and philosophy of health-related fitness education and assessment, practicing the activities and learning how these activities teach students the components and principles of health-related fitness.

The FITNESSGRAM assessment protocols and an overview of the FITNESSGRAM software are also included. Those who have or are working toward a minimum bachelor level degree and successfully complete a post-workshop examination will earn certification.

Participants receive the following books: 

  • Physical Education for Lifelong Fitness: The Physical Best Teacher's Guide
  • Physical Best Activity Guide (elementary or middle/high school level)
  • FITNESSGRAM Test Administration Manual (software is not included)

Fees: Individual registration: $195 ($175 NASPE/AAHPERD members). Group rates are also available.

Fees for both individual and group registration include all expenses for the trainer and accompanying resources listed above. Workshop host schedules a room of the appropriate size and provides AV equipment.
 
Physical Best Health-Fitness Instructor Certification
Full Day

Offered to "train the trainers" of the Physical Best program, certified Instructors lead Physical Best and FITNESSGRAM workshops across the country, teaching other teachers to implement the programs in their schools. This certification is geared toward teachers with experience in Physical Best who want to be certified to train other teachers. Please note, you must apply for selection into this certification.

Application Requirements:

  • Candidates for Instructor certification must be certified Physical Best Specialists and AAHPERD members in order to complete the certification and teach workshops.
  • Candidates must also possess a bachelor's level or higher degree and have a minimum of 3 years classroom teaching experience in HPERD.
  • Successful completion of a post-workshop examination is required for certification.
  • Certification is valid for 5 years, after which renewal requirements apply.

The 7-hour workshop gives participants a more in-depth knowledge base of the principles and partnerships supporting the Physical Best program, and teaches the keys to successful workshop management.

Highlighted include:

  • Adult learning models
  • Opportunities for practice teaching
  • Workshop planning and administration. 

This workshop is offered annually at the AAHPERD National Convention. 

Fees: Individual registration: $250 per person.

In-Service Workshops

Half and full day group in-service workshops are also available for Physical Best, FITNESSGRAM and Fitness For Life (Corbin and Lindsey).

Fees for in-services (all workshops except the certification workshops):

Half day in-service (up to 4 hours): $1,800

Full day in-service (up to 7 hours): $2,800

Fees include the trainer expenses and handouts for up to 50 participants.

Recommended resources are not included with the fees, and are available through Human Kinetics (www.humankinetics.com).  

 
Get S.M.A.R.T. with Physical Best

Through this half-day goals and motivation workshop you will gain the knowledge, strategies and activities to assist students in making lifestyle changes and improving personal wellness.  This workshop will help you to: 

  • Develop S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, attainable, results-oriented, time-bound) goals to connect data analysis to fitness assessment 
  • Understand behavior changes and the stages that lead toward the goal of a lifetime of physical activity 
  • Examine successful motivational techniques, the process of rewarding physical activity behavior extrinsically and helping students progress to understanding the intrinsic rewards associated with daily physical activity.
Introduction to Physical Best and FITNESSGRAM

This half-day workshop provides an overview of the program principles, participation in sample activities and assessments, and a question/answer session. It is ideal for a school district considering implementation of Physical Best and FITNESSGRAM that wishes to provide teachers with an overview and introduction to the programs, prior to full-scale implementation of training and resources into the curriculum.

Assessment with FITNESSGRAM

Full-day or half-day workshops include an overview of the program components and philosophy, and hands-on instruction with the FITNESSGRAM software and assessment protocols. The workshop also covers information on implementing the assessment program into the physical education curriculum. ACTIVITYGRAM is included with the full-day training. Physical Best Gets FITT

This half-day activity workshop focuses on the Physical Best activities at either the elementary OR middle/high school level, and demonstrates how they teach the health-related fitness concepts. The workshop also includes information on how to take other activities and adapt them to the Physical Best activity format (concept taught, purpose, relationship to national standards, equipment needed, procedure, assessment, inclusion tip). Implementing a Fitness for Life Course

Fitness for Life is a school physical education course that gives students the skills, knowledge, and motivation to live physically active lives. Course resources include the best-selling student textbook of its kind, developed by Charles Corbin and Ruth Lindsey. This full-day workshop covers the principles and components of a Fitness for Life course, as well as implementation and course scheduling options.
