APAC Julian U. Stein Award

This award is given annually to one AAHPERD professional who best exemplifies the outstanding characteristics of Julian U. Stein as listed in the table below. Dr. Stein's leadership in the profession, as exemplified by his teaching, mentorship, writing, speaking, and volunteerism at all levels of professional involvement, spans than than half a century. An innovator, creator, visionary, and risk-taker, Dr. Stein represents the very best in dedication to an active lifestyle and fitness for every body.

Criteria

Because Dr. Stein:

The nominee must have:

1.

Has been involved in the profession of serving individuals with disabilities for more than 50 years.

Been active in the profession of serving people with disabilities in physical activity, recreation, sport, and/or dance for at least 25 years, including at least 15 years as a member of AAHPERD.

2.

Holds a terminal degree.

Earned at least a master's degree and have studied past the master's level.

3.

Has been a prolific writer of articles, books, book chapters, and monographs.

Authored or co-authored at least 15 published articles or monographs in addition to making a unique contribution in at least one of the following areas: written a book, developed assessment tools or procedures, created a unique program, and or has written curricula.

4.

Has been a mentor to students and colleagues alike.

Two written letters from individuals who have been mentored by the nominee that clearly provide evidence of the nominee's impact on their professional development through mentoring.

5.

Has been a speaker at locally, nationally, and internationally.

Evidence of at least 10 national or international presentations.

6.

Has been involved in international level professional activities as a speaker, past international journal editor, and author.

Evidence of international professional involvement spanning at least 5 years, including but not limited to as a published author, speaker, or organization officer.

7.

Has spent significant time as a volunteer in youth sports as a coach and referee.

Evidence of volunteerism for a cause that concerns the health and wellness of people with disabilities that has been sustained over time, thus, demonstrating a long-term (10+ years) commitment of volunteer service to this chosen cause.

8.

Has been dedicated to improving the profession at the grass roots practitioner level.

Evidence of practical application of professional efforts, including but not limited to through practitioner oriented publications, teacher in-service training, conference presentations, and/or public school professional involvement.

9.

Has been active in advocacy and legislative issues at the local, state, and federal levels.

Evidence of involvement in advocacy for the rights and interests of people with disabilities in physical activity, health, wellness, and/or sport for at least 10 years.

10.

Has been an active member of many professional organizations.

Evidence of membership in at least 3 national or international organizations in addition to AAHPERD for at least 10 years.

Required Materials 

Nomination letter and a seconding letter (each not to exceed two typed pages), accompanied by documentation of the 10 criteria listed above. Nominees must meet the first two criteria and at least five of the remaining #3 through #10. Documentation for each must not exceed two typed pages.
