Profile: Julian U. Stein “Lifetime Achievement” Award - This award was created in 2005 to honor Dr. Julian U. Stein, who has been a leader, innovator, and driving force in adapted physical activity for over 50 years. Dr. Julian U. Stein was presented the award as the first “Lifetime Achievement” recipient. Dr. Julian U. Stein is considered by many to be the father of adapted physical education in the United States. He is a retired university professor from George Mason University in Virginia. For over 15 years, he was the Executive Director and Consultant for the Unit on Programs for the Handicapped for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). He has published hundreds of papers and made presentations at hundreds of professional meetings. He has also been a major contributor in the field for over 30 years, including starting the Project Aquatics and Project Aquatics Mainstream programs.
