Profile: APE Teacher of the Year 2005 is Ann J. Griffin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa to honor her for her innovation and invention when it comes to meeting the needs of students with disabilities in physical education. Ann is currently an APE consultant for Grant Wood Area Education Agency where she has worked for the past 24 years. She provides support services in APE to 33 school districts and 22 non-public schools in seven counties. In addition, she has served as an adjunct instructor at the University level teaching various courses for the past 13 years. Ann is extremely creative and enthusiastic about her work, she has produced five instructional video tapes with Championship Productions that share numerous wonderful and practical ideas for equipment and instruction of students with disabilities. One, among many, innovative examples of Ann’s work is that about five years ago she began working with a group of retired engineers from Rockwell whose motto is, “If you can dream it, we can do it.” Once the students’ equipment needs were identified, the engineers invented a prototype that physical educators and students could put to the “real” test. When a working model is in place, a design is drawn up and added to their web site in order to share with others…check it out!!!! Go to www.collinsclubs.com and click the link to RCRV (Rockwell Collins Retiree Volunteers) and look at “Completed RCRV Projects.” You will find a lot of really wonderful design ideas. There is no other way to describe Ann Griffin, her work, her commitment, her creativity, her energy, and her dedication…… other than to say SHE IS SIMPLY PHENOMENAL!
