Council on Aging & Adult Development News

CAAD Making Waves in San Diego!

The Council on Aging and Adult Development had a great program of events at the AAHPERD National Convention in San Diego and we thank all who attended our sessions!  The highlight had to be the CAAD Research Symposium with an amazing talk by the Herbert DeVries Career in Aging Award winner, Dr. Wendy Kohrt of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.  Her talk on bone health with age was fascinating and her ongoing research should continue to reveal the mystery of aging bone.  We also had a great talk about strength training for older adults from our Young Researcher Award winner, Dr. Melissa Powers from the University of Central Oklahoma.   Building on the momentum that we generated in San Diego, CAAD has big plans for the coming year.  We are working on a curriculum for a series of webinars on exercise program development.  Guidance on safe and effective exercise programming is desperately needed and we plan to fill that void!  Also, don't forget to keep up with CAAD in cyberspace – read all of CAAD's Twitter Tweets at www.twitter.com/CAAD_AgingWell!

Seniors are the Rock of Stability in the Fitness Industry

You are never too old to work out and get fit. That's the message America's seniors are sending to the fitness industry. While annual wholesale sales of fitness equipment have dropped off in recent years, and overall health club memberships in America have been stagnant since 2007, the "backbone" of the fitness industry has been older Americans–those 55 and older. Those are some of the key findings of the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA), following a recent analysis of its newly released Tracking the Fitness Movement (2010 edition) study.

Motivation and Physical Activity Behaviors Among Older Women

Drawing upon Self-Determination Theory, a recent study examined the motivational determinants of older women's dropout and participation in physical activity. Read the abstract.

Send Us Photos

CAAD is developing a library of photographs showing older adults living active and happy lives. Please email pictures of active older adults to Mary Visser with "CAAD Pictures" as the subject line. Make sure you have permission from the subjects who appear in them.

It's Never Too Late to Get Active

The International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and the ProMatura Group announce the release of ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks. For the first time, industry-wide metrics will capture the contribution and value of wellness—lifestyle activities, fitness, and recreation—to a retirement property's mission and bottom line. For more information and to participate in webinars on the subject, visit the ICAA Web site.
