AAPAR's Bicycle Safety Curriculum
In September 2008 AAPAR received a $324,000 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to create, implement, and evaluate a nationwide bicycle safety curriculum. AAPAR and NHTSA are collaborating to develop a fun, engaging curriculum that teachers and recreation professionals will use to teach safe bicycling to children in elementary school, middle school, high school, and recreation centers.
The project will include a train-the-trainers model, a pilot program and evaluation, a new certification, and collaboration with the federal government's Safe Routes to School program. Through a Request For Proposals process, AAPAR members were tapped to help with the curriculum, which is currently in development.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood recently announced strong support for bicycling and other non-motorized transport.
