Participating in outdoor sports and outdoor recreation is one key to ensuring health and fitness. Not to mention, recreation and leisure are just plain fun! Recreation fitness also involves recreation education for maximum safety and enjoyment.  

Outdoor activities such as adventure skills can be also be taught in the gym. Our Teaching Adventure Skills in the Gym Workshop, sponsored by AAPAR's Council for Adventure and Outdoor Education/Recreation (CAOER), offers the basic skills for implementing and teaching adventure programs in physical education classes at schools or in community recreation programs.  

Course Content  

This full-day workshop caters to participants with a wide range of experience. If you want to incorporate adventure skills into your school program, you can learn basic teaching skills that don't require specialized equipment. If you already have a similar program in your school or community facility, you can learn new techniques or additional skills to enhance your program.  

Hands-on activities demonstrate:      

  • Adventure without ropes    
  • Swinging and traversing on gym ropes    
  • Knot tying    
  • Prusik climbing    
  • Belaying techniques    
  • Horizontal and vertical climbing wall skills   
  • Cargo net activities    
  • Belayed climbing on innovative equipment
