Southwest District Scholar Award

Scholarly activity is considered to be more general or encompassing than research. It is the ability to create and communicate ideas through the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge that advances our understanding of health, physical education, recreation or dance. The SWD Scholar will be responsible for the SWD Scholar Lecture that is delivered at the Southwest District convention. Any professional who has been a member of AAHPERD for three consecutive years at the time of nomination, and is active in the SWD is eligible for the award. The award is intended to recognize scholars who have made recent significant contributions in our understanding of their respective disciplines.

The following criteria is used in selecting the Southwest District Scholar:

  1. The nominee should be recognized as a leading scholar in his/her discipline.
  2. The nominee should be judged as being innovative and as having an impact on his/her field.
  3. The nominee's work must have been subjected to critical review by other scholars in his/her field.
  4. The nominee's scholarship should be judged in terms of quality and not just quantity.
  5. The nominee must show a consistent and sustained scholarly record.
  6. The nominee must have served and contributed to the goals and purposes of the Southwest District.

Nominations are now being accepted.

Nominees will be contacted by the chair of the Research Committee to determine if they wish to be considered as a candidate. If they agree they will be asked to submit the following: current curriculum vitae, letter of support if a state nomination, and optional letters of recommendation.
