In 1989, this award was established in honor of Rachel Bryant, a pioneer and architect in the field of sport for girls and women. Bryant served AAHPERD as Executive Director from 1950-1971, providing strong leadership and encouraging futuristic thinking and planning.
The recipient of this award is an individual who continues to carry on the spirit of this remarkable woman who gave so much to AAHPERD and to the world of girls and women in sport.
The Rachel Bryant Award is presented annually at the Rachel Bryant Lecture during the AAHPERD General Session of the AAHPERD National Convention. Acceptance of the award requires the honoree to present the Rachel Bryant Lecture at the National Convention.
The Rachel Bryant Award recipient is selected by the AAHPERD Board of Directors and the Chair of the Rachel Bryant Lecture Committee.
The Guiding Woman in Sport Award was established in 1987 and is given in recognition of extraordinary service and leadership in female sports. The recipient may be either a AAHPERD member or nonmember. The mark of this award is the lifetime contribution made by the individual. This award is presented in recognition of a pioneering spirit and commitment to improve sport for girls and women. The Guiding Woman in Sport Award is presented annually at the AAHPERD Guiding Woman in Sport Luncheon held at the AAHPERD national convention. The award recipient is also the honorary speaker at the luncheon. The AAHPERD executive committee oversees the nomination and selection process for the Guiding Woman in Sport Award.
