The AAHPERD-AHA Partnership
Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart are educational fund development programs that are co-sponsored by AAHPERD and AHA. These programs promote physical education and provide children with knowledge of heart disease and stroke while raising funds for cardiovascular disease research, stroke research, and health education.
Jump Rope For Heart has been in schools since 1978. Since that time, the program has raised in excess of $700 million. Hoops For Heart started in 1995 and has raised in excess of $50 million for cardiovascular research and educational programs. Both programs are held in more than 28,000 schools across the nation and are present in all 50 states.
Each year more than 7 million children participate in a JRFH or HFH event, uniting parents, students and the community in an important cause. By participating in these events, students are given the opportunity to contribute to the fight against heart disease and stroke by raising money for research and education.
Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart are unique because they have an educational component. Every coordinator that conducts an event receives educational materials and lesson plans that focus on heart disease and stroke related issues such as heart attack and stroke warning signs, the importance of physical activity, and an anti-tobacco message.
Beyond the educational materials, teachers also receive jump ropes to use in their classrooms and have the opportunity to earn US GAMES certificates to purchase new physical education equipment for their programs. By working together, AAHPERD and the AHA are making a difference in the lives of students, molding a new generation of healthy, physically active volunteers! You too can make a difference– sign up to hold a JRFH or HFH event in your school!
