Staff Members Move in School

High-level support from school administrators is critical to a successful comprehensive school physical activity programs. Staff involvement in school-based physical activity provides two key benefits: 

  • School employee wellness programs have been shown to improve staff health, increase physical activity levels, and be cost effective.
  • When school staff are personally committed to good health practices, they are positive role models for students and may show increased support for student participation in physical activity.

 

Alignment with National Public Health Campaigns 
National Physical Activity Plan
  • Promote programs and facilities where people work, learn, live, play and worship (i.e., workplace public, private, and non-profit recreational sites) to provide easy access to safe and affordable physical activity opportunities.
  • Identify, summarize, and disseminate best practices, models, and evidence-based physical activity interventions in the workplace.
  • Encourage business ad industry to interact with all other sectors to identify opportunities to promote physical activity within the workplace and throughout society.
  • Educate business leaders regarding their role as positive agents of change to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles within the workplace.
  • Develop legislation and policy agendas that promote employer-sponsored physical activity programs while protecting individual employees' rights.
  • Develop a plan for monitoring and evaluating worksite health promotion programs.

 

White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity Report to the President 

  • "Active transport" should be encouraged between homes, schools, and community destinations for afterschool activities, including to and from parks, libraries, transit, bus stops, and recreation centers.

 

Healthy People 2020 Objectives Increase the proportion of adults who meet current Federal physical activity guidelines for aerobic physical activity and for muscle-strengthening activity.

  • Reduce the proportion of adults who engage in no leisure-time physical activity.
  • Increase the proportion of worksites that offer an employee health promotion program to their employees.
  • Increase the proportion of employed adults who have access to and participate in employer-based exercise facilities and exercise programs.
  • Increase the proportion of employees who participate in employer-sponsored health promotion activities.
  • Increase the proportion of employees who have access to workplace programs that prevent or reduce employee stress.
