Ideas for Generating Special Family Physical Activity Events
Enjoy hosting these special family physical activity events in the evening and outside of school hours where the whole school is invited.
- Family Activity Night - provide a special evening for families with a monthly theme. Potential activities can be seasonal in focus, instruct families in activities available in the community (climbing, hiking, biking), or provide fitness activities that can be enjoyed by multiple age groups together.
- Special Running Events - consider a special running-themed event each month that allow for friendly participation by family members of all ages, such as a Halloween Fun Run, Turkey Trot, or Reindeer Dash.
- Fabulous Fitness Fun - schedule an evening where families come together and circulate through stations that teach them about health-related fitness, and introduce them to strategies for incorporating activity throughout the day. Great for all grade levels, this activity can provide targeted learning opportunities for families. Secondary students already familiar with health-related fitness can focus on skills for an active lifestyle. Prepare fitness stations that focus on the skill-related fitness components that older youth can choose for an active lifestyle, and invite representatives from local venues to provide some introductory activities.
- School Dance Night - present a night of dancing through the decades and provide a variety of popular, line, social, and freestyle dances that are used throughout the lifespan. Every age group is guaranteed to have a great time! Introduce a variety of dances and music that represent the many cultures of your school community.
- Wellness Fair - at all grade levels, both parents and student will appreciate an evening designed for learning about the unique wellness needs of busy families. Incorporate wholistic activities that focus on the multiple dimensions of wellness.
- Bicycle Safety Rodeo - collaborate with local representatives from the Department of Transportation, law enforcement, and bicycle advocacy groups to present a bicycle safety rodeo. Focus on basic safety skills for elementary school students, and for secondary students, change it up to concentrate on commuter skills for active transportation safety.
- Family Yoga Night - provide an activity night that focuses on the benefits of yoga for stress reduction, balance, and flexibility.
- Community Fitness Fair - invite local health clubs to your middle or high school to share what they have to offer youth as they become independent fitness consumers.
- Parks and Recreation Night - invite your local Parks and Recreation Department to present sample activities that are offered in your local program-a great way to introduce families to their many free to low-cost activity options.
- Collaboration Stations - present an activity night that focuses on collaborative activities that can be participated in with partners, trios, and small groups and focus on collaborating with others
