Backyards and Beyond -- Unit One

Unit One of the Backyards and Beyond program focuses on Title IX education. Title IX is legislation passed in 1972 that ensures girls and women are given equal opportunity in federally funded education programs. This legislation includes sport opportunities.

Since 1972 opportunities for girls and women in sport have increased significantly – nearly 900%! – but the playing field is still not level as boys receive a disproportionate number of opportunities and dollars in sport.

What can you do?

Order a Backyards and Beyond Unit One – Introduction toolkit from NAGWS and host your own Gathering. Gathering guests can be your neighbors, your teammates, your co-workers or your class – just about anyone.

Host your Gathering in a convenient location – home, school, meeting room, office – and report back to NAGWS. Your Gathering will be posted on our website, you'll receive updates and information, and you'll join a network of people who are prepared to recognize Title IX issues and address Title IX concerns both in your community and in the country.

The Backyards and Beyond Toolkit is simple and fun.  It is an appropriate activity for teens and adults and puts you in control of the conversation about gender equity in your community.
