October 27, 2009 (Reston, VA) – Lynette Woodard has been named as the 2010 Guiding Woman in Sport by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS), a century-old professional membership organization whose mission is advocacy, education and programming in support of all women and girls in sport.

Woodard, a Wichita native, was a 2-time Olympian, 4-time Kodak All American and 2-time GTE Academic All American while at University of Kansas.  She still holds the record as the most prolific scorer in women's college basketball history having scored a total of 3,649 points – only "Pistol" Pete Maravich (with 3,662 points) has scored more points in college basketball.

As a trailblazer in sports, Woodard has been exemplary including being honored with 12 different Hall of Fame inductions.  She was the first Triple Crown Winner (NCAA Top Five Award, Wade Trophy and Broderick Award) all in the same year.  Woodard also made history by being the first female Harlem Globetrotter.

Woodard played for the WNBA (1997-99), was Captain of the USA Olympic Gold Medal Team (1984), served on the Olympic Committee Board of Directors (1996-2000) and played overseas for Italy while leading that team to a National Championship.  In addition, she is a registered stockbroker and holds series 7 and 63 Licenses as a registered security representative.

The Guiding Woman in Sport award is presented during the NAGWS Luncheon at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention on Friday, March 19, 2010 in Indianapolis, IN.  The award is presented in recognition of a pioneering spirit and commitment to improve sport for girls and women.

Previous Guiding Women in Sport have included C. Vivian Stringer, Robin Roberts, Willye B. White and Donna Lopiano.  Tickets are required for the luncheon and are available through the AAHPERD Convention website (www.aahperd.org).
