NAGWS Appoints Woman's Sport and Physical Activity Journal (WSPAJ) Co-editors
RESTON, VA, July 14, 2009 - National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) President Shawn Ladda has announced the appointment of Dr. Joy T. DeSensi and Dr. Athena Yiamouyiannis as new co-editors of the peer-reviewed journal Women's Sport and Physical Activity Journal (WSPAJ) effective immediately.
WSPAJ is published online three times per year and is one of two journals world-wide focusing on girls and women in sport. NAGWS began publishing the WSPAJ online in 2005. Emphases of the journal are the development of theory about women and their physicality, the gender issues relevant to women in sport and physical activity, feminist re-conceptualizations of existing knowledge, and action-oriented research. Contributions for the Journal are sought throughout the world and from traditional and non-traditional settings.
Dr. Joy T. DeSensi is Associate Dean of the University of Tennessee Graduate School and Professor in the Department of Exercise, Sport, and Leisure Studies where she served as Department Head for ten years. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has served as President of the International Association of Sport Philosophy, the National Association of Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education (NAKPEHE), and the Southern Academy of Women in Physical Activity, Sport and Health. She is also a Founding Member of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM).
Her research interests include the socio-cultural study of sport as it relates to issues of social justice, women in sport, globalization of sport, multiculturalism, and ethics in sport management. DeSensi has published in these areas as well as presented her work at international, national, regional and state conferences.
A long-time member of NAGWS, DeSensi has served on the Board, as Interim Co-editor of the Journal of Women in Sport and Physical Activity, as well as Editor of the Journal of Sport Management for NASSM, and Quest for NAKPEHE. She has been honored with many awards including Distinguished Alumna Awards from UNC Greensboro and University of Memphis, the Earle F. Ziegler Lecture Award (NASSM) and the Delphine Hanna Lecture Award (NAKPHE). Most recently she was recognized as Chancellor's Professor at the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Athena Yiamouyiannis joined Ohio University's Sports Administration faculty in 2006. Previously, she served three years as the Executive Director of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and ten years at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) as Director of Membership Services overseeing the rules education operations and assisting the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics on gender equity initiatives.
Yiamouyiannis has been a national spokesperson on Title IX and gender equity issues. When Title IX was being challenged, she worked collaboratively with the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education on the fight to save Title IX's athletics regulations. Yiamouyiannis continues to conduct research, author publications, and present on gender equity issues impacting girls and women in sport. She has served as the Executive Editor for the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and as Managing Editor for GWS News. Yiamouyiannis holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and a Master's Degree in Sports Management from The Ohio State University as well as a doctorate degree in Higher Education Administration from George Washington University.
