NASPE has a new resource available for use in advocating for physical education as an academic subject. This paper defines the characteristics of an academic subject and provides solid evidence of how physical education meets this definition. The term "core academic subjects" is not defined by the Department of Education; however, there is a de facto definition, as demonstrated by the various requirements established by states for content areas such as math, language arts and science. These requirements include state standards, assessment, teacher preparation and a required course of study.
NASPE members and partners are encouraged to download this paper and use it in your advocacy efforts for recognition of physical education as an academic subject.
