PE2020PE2020 Is About Building a Shared Vision for Physical Education in the Year 2020 and Beyond

About

Societal influences have affected perceptions of the role of public school physical education. Themes and trends in physical education have altered cyclically since the creation of the first professional association in1885.

Our initial heritage was greatly influenced by the influx of immigrants to America especially in the late 1800s and early 20th century. Two world wars, the birth of organized sports, and alarm that American children were less physically fit than their European counterparts all combined to shape our profession.

Changes in the public school system focused attention on the question of whether physical education should be "education through the physical," or "education of the physical."

Today, concerns about worsening childhood obesity continue to raise questions about our professional mission.

Through the PE2020 initiative, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) seeks to challenge professionals and non-professionals alike to reflect upon physical education.  NASPE wants you to share your views and create opportunities for physical educators to step back from their habitual ways of "doing business" and imagine our profession's future.

  • How can we better serve the needs of students and society in our rapidly changing world?
  • Can teachers structure class experiences in a different or more effective format?
  • What changes need to be made in our schools and in our professional preparation programs?

Addressing these and many other questions will help physical educators remain relevant in today's world and in the lives of the students we serve. Submit your vision now!
