|Submission Title:||Why Physical Education Should Forever be a Required Class|
|Submission Entry:||For many years there has been talk about making PE an elective. If you look around my high school,it is very sad as to how many people are very overweight. For some of these students, their 46 minutes of Physical Education a day is the ONLY exercise they get. If this is taken away from them, they will miss the opportunity to learn life long skills and be involved in some type of fitness on a daily basis.
With all of the health issues caused by obesity, one would think that we would want to be sure that we did the best that we could at trying to change the mentality of these overweight individuals. I teach all fitness classes and do not grade at all on skill. I work to each students strengths and capabilities and make sure every student feels safe in my classes. I teach them about self esteem and goals and confidence. I introduce them to fitness activities that they can take home with them and continue their activities in the privacy of their own home.
We need to start this at the elementary level so the children become aware of the facts about obesity. We need to get them involved and moving at a very early age. We need to make an impact on them and as parents and teachers we need to set a good example.
The tv, cell phone and computers are all wonderful as far as technology is concerned, but it has forced our society to become very lazy. We don't have to get up to change a channel, to open a garage door or we don't have to walk up steps at a mall. Let's work together as a society and stop obesity! It's a tremendous health risk and costs society millions of dollars a year. Let's start now, before it is too late.
