| Submission Entry: | I believe physical education teachers need to support and promote out-of-school physical activity. I believe physical activity needs to be assigned during summer vacation just like summer reading is assigned. Think about it, summer reading is assigned to help keep children learning over the summer. The same should apply to physical activity. Normally summer reading involves reading a book and writing a comprehensive essay about the book. Summer physical activity should be assigned and students should be responsible for completing NASPE's recommended weekly amounts of physical activity (i.e. 5 days of cardiovascular activity, 2-3 days of strength training, 3 days of flexibility). They should also be responsible for recording their activity so they can learn how to keep track of it to know if they are meeting the physical activity guidelines. Promoting the process of being physically active and the process of recording physical activity will lead to the development of good physical activity habits and hopefully a positive attitude toward being physically active. |
