| Submission Title: | shouldn't we plant the exercise seed early? |
| Submission Theme: | Curriculum |
| Submission Entry: | I am a personal trainer part-time. So after working with young children on healthy lifestyles all day, I head to my gym and teach those same lessons to adults who must have missed out on that education when they were in school. I am always amazed at how little adults that I work with know about nutrition and exercise. So it is important in today's PE classes to plant those seeds. Students love tag and kickball, but what is really important is teaching fundamentals and reasoning for good sound exercises. And they need to learn them in a way that is fun and interesting. Students also need to have basic nutritional information that may help them avoid bad eating habits in the future. Any game that is played in the classroom can easily be altered to include exercises and food education. Nothing is more rewarding that seeing a kindergarten student that can use good form on a squat or push-up and love doing them. So maybe treating PE classes a bit like a personal training session might not be such a bad thing! |
