Submission Entry: Physical education programs have to be focused on the national standards.  Without these, there is nothing to drive our curriculum or instruction. The national standards are the foundation for any curriculum.  P.E. is no exception.  All too often, people exit their college experience without this knowledge base.  All too often, student teachers go into schools without physical educators focusing on the national standards.  This lack of connectedness needs to be strengthened at the post-secondary level along with at all school sites.  We all need to start taking charge of our profession and shout out to everyone what exemplary programs we run with hard work and effort that directly reflect the standards.

Having high standards at the post-secondary level and in student teacher teaching sites is necessary to build that exemplary teacher.  We should never hear a student teacher ask if we work on Fridays and then in turn hear their post-secondary supervisor state that students have a lot on their plates these days.  This encourages low standards for our profession.  All too often the focus is on getting through student teaching, not the “why” of teaching. It is only through why we are teaching these particular skills that all other things fall into place.  Having high standards for our new teachers not only strengthens what I do but strengthens our programs across the nation.

Can’t post-secondary schools connect more with K-12 schools and visa-versa?  Can’t both stay on top of the game and self check each other to ensure high quality programs and high standards?  Can’t both share and invite each other to join in discussions at each other’s sites to strengthen what our profession needs?

Change is needed.
