Submission Entry: I personally believe the number one goal for physical education teachers should be to make the activities enjoyable for everyone.  If physical education teachers can make the activities fun for all ages and backgrounds, the children will be less likely to grow up with a negative view of exercise, and more likely to be able to continue their active lifestyles after they move on from elementary school.  I also think it is crucial to the dynamics of the class for there to be no more students in the gym than are in one regular classroom.  I personally remember being frustrated with going to the gym (especially on days where we were doing activities that I really enjoyed) because there were so many other students in the gym, that the amount of time actually working with the equipment was much less than the time we spent sitting waiting for it.  This cut our time to practice drastically down, when ideally all of the students should be engaged with the equipment at all times.  I also think there should be a very positive environment.  I’ve had a few coaches over the years that seemed as if they did not care if we were struggling or doing well, and we never received feedback from them regarding our progress.  When these coaches were present, most students didn’t try to reach their full potential, which should ultimately be the goal of a physical education classroom.
With children’s obesity rates skyrocketing, it is also extremely important that physical activity takes place outside the four walls of the gym as well.  Teachers should promote physical fitness and living a healthy lifestyle by being a role model to their students at all times.  Teachers should also incorporate healthy living activities in with their lessons, and take breaks throughout the school day to get their students up and on their feet, in order to improve cognition and focus.  I am extremely hopeful that these goals of making physical activity enjoyable, cutting down the size of the physical education classrooms, and having teachers promote healthy lifestyles as well, are very attainable goals that could and should be reached by the year 2020.
