| Submission Entry: | Recombining Health and Physical Education Where will physical education be in 2020? I think it will be a trip back to the future. Physical education had its start in higher education in the United States in the medical field, but health and physical education gradually grew apart. Both fields developed specialties, and at the college and university levels the future teacher who was prepared to teach both health and physical education became a But the driving force for support of physical education programs has become its contribution to the health of America’s young people. The Centers for Disease Control are supporting public school physical education programs for the contribution they make to the fight against obesity and the early onset of type 2 diabetes. Rather than emphasizing the development of physical skills for the sake of developing skilled players, many physical education programs have begun to focus on developing physically skilled students so they will improve their health and remain physically active for a lifetime. Certainly physical education will maintain the four domains it now embraces – cognitive, psychomotor, affective, and health related fitness. But the cognitive domain will have increased emphasis on the health related concepts of physical activity. The psychomotor domain will stress skills that can be used to enhance fitness and health. The affective domain will include feelings and attitudes related to wellness. In North Carolina, the Department of Public Instruction has rewritten the guidelines for the preparation of physical education teachers and health teachers to require that physical education teachers be prepared to teach health education also. In the year 2020, physical education teachers will still be teaching movement and sports skills, but physical activity’s contribution to health and fitness will be the primary focus. And it should be. |
