NASPE to Honor University of Miami’s Andy Gillentine

 Dr. Andy Gillentine, associate professor, Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences, University of Miami, Florida, will receive the Sport Management Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) during the national convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). Gillentine will be recognized at the NASPE Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday, April 3, at the Marriott Waterside Hotel in Tampa, Florida. Other honorees that evening include the National Physical Education Teachers of the Year for Elementary, Middle and High School, the National Physical Education Administrator of the Year, and the National Athletic Director of the Year Award. Olympic gold medalist Dot Richardson, M.D. will be inducted in the NASPE Hall of Fame.

A national honor, the Sport Management Outstanding Achievement Award is given to a professional who has made outstanding contributions and provided leadership in the field of sport management for over a span of 10 years or more. The award is given by the Sport Management Section of the NASPE Sport Steering Committee.

Gillentine has positively impacted other sport management professionals both in industry and academia. This can be supported by his collaborations with PGA, NASCAR, and intercollegiate football event management.  He has been a positive influence on new academicians which is evidenced by his roles on a number of thesis and dissertation committees. He also has a plethora of publications including a co-edited book, Foundations of Sport Management, which is used in a number of university classes.

Gillentine strives to be a leader in the field by sharing his knowledge with colleagues in over 100 presentations at the international, national and state levels. Not only that, he is an innovator in the sport management field as he has designed and implemented live video feed courses for IMG Academies, established a sport administration BLOG project, developed an online sport psychology lab, and infused podcasting educational strategies into Sport Marketing courses.

His professional affiliations include the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), NASPE/NASSM Accreditation Standards Task Force, the North American Society of Sport Management, the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation, the Sport Marketing Association, the Mississippi Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MSAHPERD), and the Southern District American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, among others. He holds leadership positions with many of these organizations and has consistently presented at the annual conferences of these organizations. Gillentine received his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University, his master's degree in Educational Administration from Northeastern Oklahoma State University, and his doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi.
