FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Get Healthy Mentally and Physically
Try These 101 Tips for Healthy Student-Athletes
RESTON, VA, April 26, 2010 – The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) dreams of a healthier world in which everyone's body functions at its full potential. This is particularly important for our student-athletes. NASPE wants young athletes to enjoy a high level of physical fitness, to feel good about their skills, enjoy physical activity of all kinds, and to have energy and physical stamina. The new 101 Tips for Healthy Student-Athletes, which is sponsored by Cabot Creamery Cooperative, provides school-age athletes and their families with the guidance they need to prepare their bodies and minds appropriately for practice, achieve physical fitness levels that afford them the energy and endurance they need, and minimize the risk of injury and burnout.
"The Farmers who own Cabot Creamery are proud to have connected with NASPE to produce these empowering 101 Tips for young athletes", noted Marie Frohlich, Cabot's Community and Education Program Manager, "we have this notion that athletes are naturally healthy because they are so active, but in fact, they don't always get the best advice on how to fuel up and repair their muscles with good nutrition – this brochure supports that need."
According to NASPE President Lynn Couturier, chair of the Physical Education Department, State University of New York at Cortland, "Being physically active in sports is a great way for students to get in shape, have fun, spend time with friends, and build self-confidence. It is also important to teach kids about proper nutrition, training, recovering from athletics and how to take care of themselves in order to lead a physically and mentally healthy life. This brochure provides 101 great tips to parents and their older children on how to make this happen."
Among the recommendations in the brochure are to eat breakfast to ensure that you are well-fueled for games and training, begin each workout with an active, sport-specific warm-up to prevent injury and make stretching more effective, pay attention to coaches and positive role models, and practice what they preach, and keep a record of your sports, academic, and other personal goals and check on your progress along the way. Tips for student-athletes are grouped in the following categories: eat smart, train smart, think smart, rest and recover smart, live smart, be smart, and smart parents.
Advising our youth how to live healthy when they are young will provide them with valuable lessons that they can use throughout life to grow into fit, healthy adults. 101 Tips for Healthy Student-Athletes provides a quick and easy framework for adolescents to lead a healthy lifestyle. It covers a wide spectrum of topics and is a great resource for the younger generation to refer to and parents to teach their older children.
