2012 National Physical Education Teachers of the Year Announced at Educators Convention
Other NASPE-wide Awardees Also Recognized

RESTON, VA, March 16, 2012 – Honoring the elite of the physical activity, physical education and sport professions, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) announced the National Physical Education Teachers of the Year (TOY) for elementary, middle, and high school levels during the 127th annual American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention & Expo.  The 2012 national award winners are:

  • Elementary School TOY-- PJ Jarvis, Opportunity Elementary School, WA
  • Middle School TOY -- Jessica Shawley, Moscow Jr. High School, ID
  • High School TOY-- Cindy Ferek, Turner Ashby High School, VA

The National Physical Educator of the Year Awards are given in recognition of outstandingteaching performance and the ability to motivate today's youth to participate in a lifetime of physical activity. This award is sponsored by NASPE and Sportime, an innovator of equipment and services for physical educators.

Other award recipients and recognitions include Kristine Lilly, a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Tim Flannery, director of coaching education, for the National Federation of State High School Associations, and Thomas McKenzie, professor, San Diego State University, all inducted into the NASPE Hall of Fame. Kris Fritz from the Sheboygan Schools/ Early Learning Center in WI and Lillyan Wright. a former  New Jersey high school physical education teacher, coach, college professor, and athletic director with a career spanning more than 70 years, received the Joy of Effort Award. Audrey Satterblom from the Indianapolis Public Schools, IN received the Channing Mann Outstanding Physical Education Administrator Award, and Gill Fried professor at the University of New Haven, CT received the Sport Management Outstanding Achievement Award.

Dorothy Lambdin clinical professor at The University of Texas, Austin received the Margie R. Hanson Elementary Physical Education Distinguished Service Award. Lynn Housner, professor and associate dean from West Virginia University was honored with two awards including the Curriculum and Instruction Honor Award and the Physical Education Teacher Education Honor Award.

Russ Carson, professor at Louisiana State University received the Helen M. Heitmann Curriculum and Instruction Young Scholar Award. Matthias Wagner, graduate sport scientist and guess professor from the University of Konstanz in Germany received the Lolas E. Halverson Motor Development Young Investigator Award.

Barbara (Babs) Greene, clinical instructor from Georgia State University received the Outstanding Mentor of the Year Award. The Ruth B. Glassow Biomechanics Honor award went to Lawrence Abraham, a professor from The University of Texas, Austin. Sheila Kelly, lecturer from Humboldt State University in California received the Sport and Exercise Psychology Dissertation Award.

This year's Past Presidents' Circle Unsung Hero for Youth Award went to Marlon Mussington, physical education teacher from the Paul Cuffee School in Rhode Island.

Three schools were also nationally recognized for an exemplary physical education program including Capital High School in Helena, MT, Hannah Martin Elementary School in Lake in the Hills, IL and Jefferson Road Elementary School, in Pittsford, NY.
