NASPE Awards Now a Part of the AAHPERD Recognition Awards Program
The vote to unify AAHPERD and its associations has given AAHPERD a chance to review and improve its awards and recognition program. Our awards program is now unified and deserving individuals will be recognized by the unified AAHPERD. Following the Charlotte vote to unify, President Gale Wiedow designated an ad hoc committee of leaders from each of the former structures (Associations and Research Consortium) to determine awards to be given at the 2014 convention in St. Louis. Many former NASPE awards are now part of the new recognition program.
The committee agreed to designate existing awards to be given in 2014 and those that would be put on hold for a year until more of the structure of AAHERD was determined and appropriate award selection committees could be designated. Reorganizing awards or identifying appropriate selection committees in light of the reorganization will take some time and it was decided a more complete review of individual awards will take place in the coming year.
Criteria used for choosing awards to be included at the 2014 St. Louis convention included 1) centrality to mission of the unified AAHPERD; 2) priority from the former Association/RC; 3) clarity of nomination criteria/process; and 4) number of previous nominations. Additionally, we expanded the criteria for some awards such as the Hall of Fame Award to include all discipline areas of the unified AAHPERD.
We are excited about the opportunity to honor members with the awards to be presented in 2014 and look forward to having the time reorganize awards placed on hold this year as the unified AAHPERD structure and strategic plan is developed and put in place. We look forward to the coming year and the chance to match the award process with the new AAHPERD.
