Fleetwood Elementary School

Fleetwood

Fleetwood School, an elementary school of 359 students, is located in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, 15 miles east of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.   Fleetwood School is one of six elementary schools in the Mount Laurel Township School District, which enrolls 4,516 students.  The school serves pre-school through fourth grade classes. Sixty-five professional staff and one physical education teacher work at the school.  Students are scheduled for physical education class twice a week for twenty-five minutes per session.

A unique feature of the Fleetwood School physical education curriculum is the use of the Understanding by Design program for curriculum writing. The physical education curriculum engages students in authentic, performance-based experiences and includes traditional activities such as dance, tennis, gymnastics, and tumbling. Fitness training activities such as the power climber, climbing ropes, traverse wall and rope jumping, adventure and outdoor activities are part of the curriculum. Fleetwood School has one gymnasium with a stage that is used at times for physical education activities as well as outdoor facilities that include a large playground, two baseball fields, a large blacktop area, and two tennis courts. The school is fortunate to have a healthy PTO which has assisted the physical education department with funds to purchase an extensive array of equipment.
