MILA Elementary School

MILA PE teachers

MILA Elementary School was the original Merritt Island Launching Annex before they moved everything to Cape Canaveral.  It serves approximately 560 students which include specific learning disabilities, emotionally handicapped, varying exceptionalities, profound mentally handicapped, early exceptional learning program, and basic education.  It is a Title One School where seventy-two percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch.  Thirty-five percent of our student population is composed of minority students

Adding even more to the mix of students, forty-nine percent of our student population is considered exceptional education.  We have students as young as two years old in an EELP program, we have V-PK for four year old students, and we have students in kindergarten through sixth grade with every exceptionality being taught in self contained or inclusive classrooms alongside typically developing children

At MILA, each child receives an average of 125 minutes per week with one of the P.E. specialists and over 200 minutes combined with wellness activities with the classroom teacher.

Our facilities include four indoor rooms and a pool that are designated for physical education.  One room is a full time S.M.I.L.E lab and one is a full time Geo-Motion/Dance Dance Revelation that is used by students daily, while the other two are used for specific lessons and demonstrations. These classrooms include technology that is used for teaching and assessment. MILA has access to three softball fields and three baseball fields that are maintained by Brevard County Parks and Recreation.  In addition, we have 5 acres of shaded area.  Because of the facilities and the spacious fields, we are able to continue classes while teachers are conducting their own wellness activities outdoors away from any P.E. areas.

"The physical education at MILA Elementary is what this award signifies.  I can honestly say that I observed one of the most complete physical education programs in my 15 years of education.  Not only is MILA a model program for Brevard County it should be a model program for the entire country."  -Eric Stern, FAHPERD President
