"Throughout my public school and college teaching career I have consistently embraced the philosophical ideals of American educator John Dewey whose 20th century writings, beliefs, and teachings continue to have profound influences on schooling throughout the world. Initially introduced as Instrumentalism, some version of Dewey's philosophical position seems to emerge every decade under a trendy new name; however his basic tenets focusing on learning-by-doing rather than by tutoring, drilling, and indoctrination are a central part of every new edition of each emerging dogma. Every lecture I give, project I assign, activity I require, and assessment I conduct reflects my pledge to learning-by-doing. Dewey's philosophical influence -- the learning-by-doing theme -- is palpable throughout each course I have taught or designed."
