Running is a great activity that offers many health benefits. Running regularly can help with weight loss and fighting diseases such cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Running can also positively influence mental health as it helps to alleviate signs and symptoms of depression. The major fitness components associated with proper running and fitness programs are cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Depending on how often your running program meets, the age of your student participants, and their experience, you may want to focus on basic skills or expand into intermediate and more advanced skills and concepts. Additionally, if your program is meeting multiple times per week and/or is being conducted over a longer time period (e.g., 3+ months), you may want to integrate some cross-training activities such as stair running, rope jumping, 3-on-3 soccer, and strength training and conditioning.
