Helen M. Heitmann Research Grant Recipients

Drs. B. Ann Boyce from the University of Virginia and G. Linda Rikard from George Mason University, have been awarded the 2009 Helen M. Heitmann Research Grant for their project entitled PETE Doctoral Programs: Current Status and Future Directions.

Drs. Boyce and Rikard have been investigating the shortage of doctoral level candidates with terminal degrees in the area of Physical Education Pedagogy for over 10 years.  With the help of the Heitmann funds, Boyce and Dr. Rikard will continue their work and pursue three projects that will address three critical questions, related to:

(a) the number, characteristics and possible changes in doctoral granting PETE programs during the past three years;

(b) the "supply" (PETE doctoral candidate production plus the number of  existing PETE professionals, who are successful at changing positions) and the "demand" (job positions availability) issue targeted to the academic year of 2008-2009, and

(c) strategies for the enhanced production of future doctoral level PETE professionals.
