This year's Coaching Education Day will be held on Wednesday, March 14th at the AAHPERD National Convention & Expo, in the John B. Hynes Memorial Convention Center in Boston. Sessions will begin at 8:00am and continue throughout the day until 5:00pm. Each session will begin with a 15 minute lead in presentation to stir the pot for a 15 minute panel discussion to really get the attendees involved! Check out the table below for an overview of the day's lineup. NASPE will also be raffling off hot items throughout the day such as a loaded Microsoft Tablet, a $100 dollar VISA gift card, a 1 year NASPE/AAHPERD membership, and copies of NASPE's National Standards for Sport Coaches book.

8:00 - 8:30 Justifying Sports Programs - This session will show coaches how to build a case for their sports program, based on academic indicators and other measures decision-makers look at when weighing the cost benefit ratio of sports programs. Samples of successful data collection and analysis for the benefit of the sports programs will be explained.

8:30 - 9:00 Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk: Is your coaching philosophy clear in all that you do? - Every coach knows it is important to have a philosophy.  Unfortunately, too often that philosophy becomes just an interesting exercise on paper, not a guiding principle for action. This workshop is designed to help coaches clarify their philosophy, understand how to put it into action and explore ways to evaluate how well they are living what they believe in.

9:00 - 9:30 Developing Mental Toughness Through Goal Setting - This session will look at the use of goal setting to create an environment that fosters mental toughness. The focus will be on creating controllable, process goals that can be applied throughout a season. Various practical suggestions will be provided.

9:30 - 10:00 Building Motivation: Focusing on Learning, Effort and Improvement - This session will examine quality extrinsic and intrinsic motivation strategies.  The emphasis will be on how the coach can structure the environment by focusing on learning, effort, and improvement to promote intrinsic motivation.  Principles for the effective use of extrinsic strategies to enhance motivation will also be shared.

10:00 - 10:30 Positive Conditioning Strategies - Recognize how to use conditioning to motivate your athletes to perform better in practice and in competition. Examples of how to integrate positive conditioning into your practice plans and how to match coaching techniques with your coaching philosophy will be discussed. Concepts of measuring and monitoring proper conditioning intensity as well as ensuring equal application of positive conditioning for all athletes will be presented.

10:30 - 11:00 Exercise and Daily Minutes - Coaches will learn how to integrate concepts of the Comprehensive School Physical Activity Plan as it applies to intramural and interscholastic sports, especially accumulating 60-minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity. Sports provide one of the best opportunities for children and adolescents to integrate fitness concepts into sports application via acquisition of fundamental motor skills. Specific examples of fun activities, games, and exercises that coaches can use will be presented.

11:00 - 11:30 Handling Injured Athletes - Panelists will present an overview of common injury scenarios faced by coaches and physical educators before discussing possible courses of action. The panel will then open up the session to audience questions about more specific or detailed situations.

11:30 - 12:00 Rethink Recovery with Low Fat Chocolate Milk: Nature's Recovery Drink - Clete McLeod, Director of Strength & Conditioning at Southern Illinois University, will present on the latest post-exercise recovery nutrition science surrounding lowfat chocolate milk. He will offer expert insights and tips that could help your athletes recover and rebound faster for the next game or workout.  It will focus on a growing number of published studies that reinforce the post-exercise recovery advantages of lowfat chocolate milk, and will also cover nutrition and exercise physiology. This session shares details about the research, recovery techniques and more.

1:30 - 2:00 Sport Drills and Life Skills - Achieving positive developmental outcomes is not accidental, nor is it the natural byproduct of youth sport participation. This session will explore how coaches can implement simple life skill lesson plans to use in youth sport practices.

2:00 - 2:30 Navigating the Grey Area: Ethical Decision-Making in Coaching - Pressure, intensity and dilemmas can be found at all levels of sport. In order to negotiate these challenges and make decisions that are in the best interest of their athletes, coaches need to understand their roles and responsibilities as leaders.  This program will discuss ethics, moral decision making and their application in coaching.

2:30 - 3:00 Selecting Support Staff: Work Well With Your Assistant Coaches - Creating a strong support staff is a purposeful task that needs a solid commitment to achieve.  This session will explore the many ways to attain the coaching staff needed to fit your philosophy.

3:00 - 3:30 Hey! You got your Chocolate in my Peanut Butter! Can PE and Coaching Co-exist? - Coaching and physical education have much more in common than it may appear.  Both require systematic planning, application of sport science and learning theories and quality leadership from someone who knows how to teach.  Unfortunately, the two sides rarely work together or value contribution the other brings to the game.  This program will explore how to integrate the best of both fields for the benefit of the student, athlete, teacher, coach and sport environment. 3:30 - 4:00 The Sport Parent: THEIR Side of the Story - Sport parents can cause headaches for coaches with questions, comments and concerns about coaching decisions. At the same time, coaches often forget to consider the viewpoint of the sport parent. This session will encourage coaches to think about the challenges of being a sport parent and ways to encourage effective communication.

4:00 - 4:30 The National Coaching Standards: The Coaching Profession's Best Kept Secret - Did you know there are National Coaching Standards in the United States?  Originally written in 1996 the National Coaching Standards are still a mystery to many coaches, ADs, and parents.  This session will acquaint the audience with the standards and provide opportunity to discuss the standards and their importance to providing our athletes with properly prepared coaches.
