Shape of the Nation

The 2006 Shape of the Nation report provides current information on the status of physical education in each of the states and the District of Columbia in the following areas:      

• Time requirements       
• Exemptions/waivers and substitutions    
• Class size
• Standards, curriculum, and instruction       
• Student assessment and program accountability        
• Physical education teacher certification/licensure       
• National Board Certification in physical education     
• Body mass index (BMI) collection

This report will not only bring attention to the importance of quality, daily physical education programs for all school age children; it will also provide information that can be used as the basis for expanding and improving physical education programs in those states that need assistance. 

Advocates can use this information in presentations, letters, and other means of communication with federal and state policymakers, the media, and the general public as part of the basis for expanding and improving physical education.
