Submission Procedures

1. Preparing Manuscripts
Manuscripts must conform to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA; 5th ed.) style. To facilitate the review process, use double-spaced type, and include line numbers. Papers should not exceed 28 pages, including references, tables, and figures. Longer papers may be accepted for multiple studies, reviews, and content areas such as sociocultural, historical, or philosophical research. Papers deviating from the recommended format will not be reviewed until they are revised to meet the appropriate format.

Submissions must be received electronically. Submit a copy of the article in Word or WordPerfect to jce@aahperd.org. Manuscripts will be returned electronically for review and editing purposes. All authors should be sure to provide the JCE editors with an accurate email and phone contact in order to correspond and provide feedback regarding a manuscript.

The manuscript order is:

2. Types of Articles

Authors now have 3 different manuscript types to submit for publication; traditional research based articles, book reviews, and action research/best practices.

Traditional research articles - Sound scientific inquiry into the art and science of coaching athletes.

Book reviews - Textbook or personal reads that enhance the development and practice of coaching.

From the Field - Provides an avenue for researchers who want to emphasize the application of their research, or expert level coaches who are willing to share their best practices from an action research perspective.

3. Cover Letters

Authors must include the following statements:

  1. "This manuscript represents results of original work that have not been published elsewhere (except as an abstract in conference proceedings). This manuscript has not and will not be submitted for publication elsewhere until a decision is made regarding its acceptability for publication in Journal of Coaching Education. If accepted for publication, it will not be published elsewhere. Furthermore, if there are any perceived financial conflicts of interest related to the research reported in the manuscript, I/ we (the author/s) have disclosed it in the Author's Notes."

  2. "This research is not part of a larger study." If it is, then authors must follow the guidelines specified on pp. 351-353 of the APA publications manual (5th ed.). Authors must upload a cover letter with the manuscript. Upload the letter and document in the same attachment.

4. Blind Reviews
Because reviews are blind, include a second title page with only the title, running head, and page header. It must have no reference to authors or funding agency except as a reference citation.

6. Proofreading
The primary author will receive page proofs for correction approximately four weeks before publication. In cases of multiple authors, proofs will be sent to the first author, unless otherwise indicated. The author bears primary responsibility for proofreading the manuscript and should, therefore, be extremely thorough.

7. Copyright and Permission to Reprint

All rights reserved. Except as defined in 17 USC section 107, permission to republish materials in this publication must be obtained from the editor.

In keeping with copyright law (P.L. 94-553) authors must, whenever legally possible, assign the copyright of accepted manuscripts to NASPE so that both the author(s) and the Alliance are protected from misuse of copyrighted materials.

Address permission requests to: JCE, NASPE (1900 Association Drive, Reston, VA 20191).

On receipt of legitimate written requests, permission is granted by NASPE for use of brief quotations (approximately 250 words) in published works. Permission is automatically granted to authors to use their own articles in other published work with which they are connected. Permission to reprint entire articles, for inclusion in a publication to be offered for sale, is granted only on payment of a fee to NASPE.

In these instances, NASPE requests that permission be obtained from the author(s) as well.

8. Protecting and Labeling Research Participants

The JCE editorial board requires all authors submiting manuscripts for review and possible publication to take all appropriate steps to obtain the informed consent of all humans participating in the research, regardless of the country's regulations under which the research was conducted.

The author need not describe in the manuscript specific steps taken to obtain the informed consent; however, the author must include a statement that participants provided informed consent, or some similar phraseology. The editor-in-chief understands that such a statement indicates the author's guarantee of compliance with the National Research Act of 1974 (P.L. 93-348).

All studies involving animal experimentation must be conducted in conformance with the Guiding Principles in the Care and Use of Animals of the American Physiological Society. Descriptive categories, such as male-female, black-white, Jewish-Christian, emotionally disturbed-normal, or high achievers-low achievers, are sometimes used to label participants.

Authors must be careful that the construct label selected to identify a group of human participants is a valid, descriptive term that can be documented as accepted, current, professional terminology. Readers are advised that publication in JCE does not indicate editorial sanction of construct labels used by authors.

10. Quick Points of Reference

  • To ensure a quick, but quality review, remember that manuscript submission is a step-by-step process.
  • JCE will be published three times per year.
  • All articles are accepted with the notion that they have not been accepted or published in journals. We will publish scholarship that has been presented at a conference.  We will consider only one-submission-per-author(s)-per-issue. You will receive a manuscript submission number. Use it in all correspondence with this journal.
  • In general, allow 75-90 days for review and evaluation process. Articles in JCE must have a 7,000 word maximum and must follow APA (American Psychological Association) standards.
  • When reviews are completed, you will be notified via email whether your manuscript was accepted as is; accepted with minor revisions; accepted with major revisions; or rejected.
  • Usually, authors receive all-reviews-in-one: 2-3 reviews are combined into one file/attachment.
  • As you compose your final copy, remember: revising and editing is the most important stage in this submission process.
  • Your final copy will be read and verified against the reviewers' copy. If there is a conflict between reviewers, use designated review as your guideline.
  • Reviewers have invested time and effort in your manuscript and so should you. Careless or sloppy revision will disqualify your submission from further consideration.
