Educating the Whole Child & Reducing Childhood Obesity

Published in the National Association of State Boards of Education, this article highlights many of the reasons physical education is important to today's society and can be used for talking points and as a leave-behind when meeting with state or local lawmakers to advocate for physical education.

Although NASPE does not offer a position on the use of Body Mass Index (BMI) in school settings, NASPE supports the recommendations set forth by the CDC:
NASPE currently does not have an established standard for health and physical education professionals when taking BMI readings of students in their setting. However, BMI is one of the tests used in FITNESSGRAM, the assessment component of the NASPE Physical Best curriculum.
