Through
participating in a quality, daily and standard based physical education
curriculum, students at Antelope Crossing Middle School, in the
town of Antelope, California, will value and invest in their own
physical, cognitive and social emotional development. The main
focus is for the student to learn how to develop, maintain and
self-assess personal health, fitness and motor skills through participation
in a variety of developmentally appropriate activities. Seven teachers
serve 1300 students, grades 6-8. The students attend physical education
on a daily basis for fifty minutes throughout their 3 years. Students
are encouraged to participate in a variety of physical activity
based after school clubs, such as, the Outdoor Adventure Club (snow
boarding/skiing, kayaking, rock climbing, ropes course), PE club
(jog-a-thon, mini sports clinics- lacrosse, fencing, etc.) and
Fitness Club. Antelope Crossing is a recipient of a “Physical
Education Progress” (PEP) grant. This grant helped to make
progress in meeting the state standards of physical education.
The purchase of technology equipment through the grant has permitted
the students to engage in authentic assessment and a more individualized
program. Antelope Crossing serves as a “ Showcase School” for
Polar and a resource/model program for the West Coast. There is
strong administrative and community support for Antelope Crossing
as acknowledged through letters of recommendation and parent communication.
