George B. Carpenter School, located in the Community Consolidated School District
64 in Park Ridge, Illinois, is a small elementary school with an enrollment of
361 students. Of those students, 182 are male and 179 are females. The large
majority of the students are white (94.1%), with Asian/Pacific Islander (3.6%)
and Hispanic (1.8%) comprising the rest of the student body. The physical education
staff includes two full-time physical educators who have been there more than
thirteen years, and a part-time teacher. The Kindergarten students at Carpenter
School attend three thirty minute physical education class sessions per week.
Students in grades one through five attend four thirty minute physical education
class sessions each week. The physical education curriculum includes movement
activities, fitness, traditional team sports (basketball, soccer, flag football,
softball, and floor hockey), tumbling, gymnastics, and dance. Carpenter School
has two gymnasiums with rubberized floors, and one with a traverse-climbing wall.
There is a large grassy outdoor field and two blacktop areas that are utilized
as teaching stations. Even though Carpenter is the smallest elementary school
in District 64, they house the most severe special education students in the
district. Eighty-four students receive IEP services. Whenever possible, these
students are mainstreamed. Special Needs Kindergarten, Special Needs First, Adapted
Primary, and Adapted Intermediate classes have been designed to address the needs
of developmentally delayed students.
