PE teachers Chesterfield Elementary School is doing many outstanding and unique things. The written curriculum provides solid direction for physical instruction at the elementary level. The use of technology is one area where they standout. Technology applications include heart rate monitors and pedometers, Turning Point to record student response to cognitive assessment giving instant feedback and use Dartfish software to allow students to view and analyze their performances. Students make fitness videos and participate in student centered podcasting. Classroom teachers worked with the students and the physical education teachers on these projects as the students were writing their scripts. A website includes information about the physical education program. Several events are hosted throughout the school year which help to advocate for physical education. These include a District Cross Country Meet in October that included nine schools and 1300 runners, Jump Rope for Heart in February, and an All District Track Meet in May. A team teaching model is used with two LEAD teachers and two part-time supporting teachers. 538 students receive physical education instruction 4 times per week at 30 minutes per class period and one day per week of health instruction. Half day kindergarten students receive physical education twice per week. The goal is to meet each child at his or her instructional level by providing differentiated instruction.
