Chief Kanim Middle School, built in 1991, is one of two middle schools in
the Snoqualmie Valley School District. This school district covers a large
geographic area that is predominantly rural. Two experienced physical educators
at CKMS currently serve approximately 630, 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students
and are active in program advocacy efforts and physical activity programs beyond
the classroom walls to include intramurals, athletics and community involvement.
The school is located in historically Native American lands. The support of
the Snoqualmie Tribe for education has been recognized by naming the school
after its chief. This rural, mid to high income area is experiencing rapid
growth.
The physical education program is heavily sport and fitness oriented,
with a mix of Character Education transcending all physical education
content. There is a good mix of team, dual and individual sports offered,
as well as some adventure education opportunities (e.g., orienteering).
These competitive and lifetime activities are balanced out with a strong
health-related fitness program. Students are expected to participate
in daily physical education two out of three trimesters per year. New
facilities including addition of a second gym, fitness center (also available
for community use) and a PAR fitness course provide unique opportunities
for student participation in a wide variety of activities.
