Founded in 1961, one physical education teacher at May Morley Elementary
School currently serves 498 students, grades K-5, as part of the
Lincoln Public Schools (LPS). May Morley is located in Nebraska’s
second largest Metropolitan area, Lincoln. Additionally, LPS is the
second largest school district serving about 33,500 students overall.
The teacher’s long tenure at this school has enabled her institutional
knowledge and community relations that have served the school, students,
and her program very well. This is evidenced in the high parental
support that is enjoyed by the program and the strong building principal
backing for physical education. The program has evolved over the
years into a ‘Skill Theme’ curriculum model. Students
are exposed to a wide variety of motor skill activities in this once
or twice a week program. It is important to note that for Kindergarten
and First Grade students, the Physical Educator and Music Educator
have exemplified ‘Integrative Learning’ and have created
a FUNTASTICS curriculum model for their program. Additionally,
regardless of the grade level being served, each student is greeted
in class with an ‘Instant Activity’ to engage the learners
as they enter the gymnasium. Many non-school time, skill and fitness-based
programs are made available to increase student physical activity.
She has had a high level of success with these before and after school
fitness ‘clubs’ that reinforce and supplement the ‘in-school’ physical
education program she has developed. Unique programs combining math,
reading and movement skills have shown increased scores for students
with low reading and math scores. An extra class is provided for
2 nd graders struggling with motor skills. A walking club involves
students, parents and grandparents, juggling and jump rope clubs
extend the physical education program beyond class time.
