- Cartoogechaye is a Cherokee word meaning small village or village
beyond.
- Two fulltime teachers provide daily physical education for
385 students. K-2 receives 150 minutes of physical education
per week and 3-5 receive 200 minutes of physical education per
week.
- The students’ participate in a variety of lifetime activities
including hiking on the Appalachian Trail and Bartrum Trail,
orienteering, bicycling, golf, tennis, and dance. Juggling, rock
climbing, unicycles, cup stacking, a ropes course and other unique
activities provide an element of challenge, fitness and fun to
the curriculum.
- Physical Fitness is an important part of our curriculum. Pedometers
and heart rate monitors are used regularly by 3 rd-5 th grade
students. Personal goal setting is emphasized. Digital video
camera recorders are used as an assessment tool and to create
homemade exercise videos and instructional videos. Digital cameras
are used to create integrated learning activities and to take
student pictures for our “Wall of Fame”. Gymnastics,
creative movement, integrated learning, and skill building activities
round out the curriculum.
- Our curriculum is based on the North Carolina Standard Course
of Study for Healthful Living as well as NASPE’s National
Standards for Physical Education
