Daily physical education for first grade students allows these Hortonville Elementary School students to meet the nationally recommended amount of 150 minutes of physical education per week. As a result they develop a solid fundamental skill base in preparation for grades 2-4 when they receive 150 minutes of physical education every two weeks. Students with special needs participate in both regular physical education classes as well as “specially designed physical education” taught by the physical education specialist. “Fitness Education: The Shape of Things to Come” is the curriculum that the Hortonville Area School District implemented as the result of receiving a 2001 PEP grant. Fitness and lifetime activities are emphasized using technology, fitness and lifetime sports equipment purchased with grant funds. Students in grades 2-4 wear pedometers during every physical education class while heart rate monitors are worn by grades 3-4 students once each month. The curriculum has been recognized in Sports Illustrated and on the NBC Nightly News. Hortonville Elementary School has been selected as a Polar Showcase School, NASPE STARS Level 2 (2005-2007), and a pilot school for the Clinton Foundation’s Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
