The physical education department at Hortonville Middle School strives to inspire its students to lead healthy active lifestyles! Two full time teachers and one part time teacher provide physical education for 468 students at Hortonville Middle School. The focus of the program is exposure to a variety of movement activities including sport, dance, adventure/outdoor with an emphasis on fitness throughout. The use of pedometers and heart rate monitors on a regular basis measures the level of physical activity at all grade levels. The fitness testing, including the TriFit system is used to measure fitness levels. The focus of grading is on achievement of physical education content which follows a district policy that attendance and behavior may not be used to lower grades. The physical education department has taken the leadership role to improve the health of the entire school through their successful participation in the program sponsored by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to receive a bronze award (2007) as one of 23 recipients nationally. The school district received a PEP grant (2001) and took great strides in improving technology and their curriculum. The PE department has each student design a fitness calendar to use over the summer to encourage a healthy active lifestyle. The eighth grade students also participate in a multidisciplinary approach by creating a Healthy Lifestyle Scrapbook which includes the areas of physical education, health education, art education and computer education.
