Hortonville High School is a small school with a big reputation. Their program and staff have received numerous honors and recognition, including the Gold Governor's School Health Award in Wisconsin and the Bronze Level Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. They have high expectations and work hard to continuously update and improve the Physical Education program. Their program is aligned with the National Standards for Physical Education. Their staff promotes student personal choice for fitness and health. Over the past eleven years the physical education faculty has worked to provide a relevant curriculum filled with offerings of lifetime physical activities including curling, fly fishing, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. A "cardio room," an up to date fitness assessment system, and other technology such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are a few of the improvements to the Hortonville Physical Education program. This curriculum improvement has been supported through funding from the award of a Carol M. White "Progress in Physical Education" grant. This is another prestigious honor for the school and its staff. Governor James Doyle has recognized Hortonville as one of the school districts "leading the way" in improving fitness programs in Wisconsin.

Hortonville has many strong points in its physical education program:

  • Teacher student ratios consistently less than 1 to 30. This is typically the same as other academic areas of the curriculum.
  • Vast amount of equipment for many different activities.
  • Excellent form for doctors' excuse listing what can, as well as what can't be participated in by the students.
  • Requirement, as well as opportunity, for students to make up all missed physical education classes.
  • Students who need to be excused physically from class are still engaged in other domains with the concurrent class.
  • Demonstration of a link among elementary, middle, secondary Physical Education mission statements and the Hortonville School District Mission Statement.
  • Unit plans and lesson plans are aligned with the National Standards for Physical Education
