Date: Thursday, March 15, 2012
11:45 AM - 2:00 PM
Convention Center: Ballroom C
2012 AAHPERD National Convention and Exposition
Boston, MA
March 13-17
In this half-day master session, Eric Franklin will introduce anatomically based motor imagery to promote safe dance technique and prevent injury with a focus on the plié: Its purpose in dance training and performance, its sound biomechanical performance and how it is best employed to create healthy and expressive technique for turnout, jumps and balance.
The session begins with an introduction to the anatomy and biomechanics of the pelvis, hip and sacroiliac articulations emphasizing efficient interaction of these joints to create dynamic alignment, strength and flexibility. Specific imagery and self-touch exercises will then be introduced that increase the safety of the lower back, knees and feet in turnout and jumps. The relationship between dance educational tools and dance science is provided at each step of the process.
The movement session will also demonstrate how to introduce these concepts to dancers with little knowledge of anatomy and how to increase motivation by linking anatomical knowledge with the experience of greater technical ease. The session will provide practical experience of the subtle but important coordination of the legs and pelvis which will lead to improved stability, flexibility and alignment in the plié. Dance educators will be shown how to use imagery and language that explains even complex subject matter at all levels of experience. Speaker: Eric Franklin
