The Student Literary Award is an annual competition conducted by NDA to encourage and recognize high quality scholarship and professional writing on dance and dance education by collegiate students of dance.
2012 Student Literary Award Winner Anicka Austin
"Artistic Flow Experience as An Enhancement to Movement Therapy Practice" (To be published in the Nu Delta Alpha Journal Vol. 4)

Anicka Austin is a 2011 graduate of Kennesaw State University with a B.A. in Dance. In the summer of 2009, she participated in the American Dance Festival during a Video and Archives internship. Recently she choreographed for the American College Dance Festival and worked on two independent short dance films. She has performed works by Lauri Stallings and Cecil Slaughter and studied with George Staib, Bebe Miller, and dance critic Cynthia Perry. She has worked as a research assistant to Dr. Susan Wiesner on a study involving conflict metaphor and movement analysis.

2011 Student Literary Award Winner Kelly Topita
Mascarades~The Historical Understanding of Dance in the European Court
Kelly Topita is an English major at Washington College (WC) in Chestertown, MD. She is a member of the WC Chapter of Nu Delta Alpha and has been its historian for three years. She has participated in the Dance Program, primarily concentrating on ballet, and has performed with the Washington College Dance Company in concerts, Drama Department productions, and in 16th century court dances for the annual Renaissance Christmas dinner in collaboration with the WC Music Department. She also has taught dance to children at Community Dance Days hosted by Nu Delta Alpha. Prior to college she studied ballet, tap, and jazz at Dancer's Dreams Studio in Pasadena, Maryland.

Submission Instructions
The candidate must be enrolled in a dance course at the time of entrance and be sponsored by a member of the dance faculty.
The manuscript should be an original composition created for this program by the student in whose name it is submitted, although the work can be an outgrowth of a class writing assignment. All entries must be typewritten, double spaced, and between three to fifteen pages in length. All reference materials must be properly cited using the APA Manuscript Style. The student's name, institution, or faculty sponsor's name should not appear anywhere on or within the manuscript.
One undergraduate and one graduate award will be given for the best original manuscript in each category. Award recipients must condense their article to 1500 words for publication in NDA's newsletter, Spotlight on Dance (Should NDA publish a Dance Journal, the full paper can be published therein). Awardee(s) will receive a one-year student membership in NDA. The recipients will be recognized at the NDA/AAHPERD national convention.
All entries must be received by January 10 of that year. The original manuscript and two copies, along with a completed NDA Student Literary Award Application form, must be sent to:
