The mission of AAHPERD Physical Activity & Recreation is to enhance quality of life by promoting creative and active lifestyles through meaningful physical activity, recreation, and fitness experiences across the lifespan, with particular focus on community based programs.
Our members are Physical Fitness and Active Living Experts: professors, students, teachers, fitness professionals, recreation instructors, and community leaders who promote lifelong physical activity, adapted physical education, and recreation sports and leisure activities among people of all ages and abilities.
Physical activity, recreation, and fitness are for ALL ages and abilities—not just for natural athletes, not just for kids, and not just for the able-bodied. Physical activity and recreation are for every body. And we educate every body. Our workshops, conferences, and publications incorporate activities that can be modified for people with disabilities, seniors, and previously inactive (or "pre-athletic"!) people.
Members advocate and encourage programs, policies, standards, and research that promote physical activity and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities.
Members promote and teach recreation and leisure activities of all kinds—from golfing, biking, and swimming to canoeing, skiing, and outdoor adventure skills. These represent just a few of the many recreation sports people can engage in for a lifetime of fitness and fun. And all can be adapted to suit any ability level! Our workshops, conferences, and publications offer training, ideas, and certification for recreation instructors, teachers, and community leaders looking to incorporate recreation programs into their school curriculum or community programs.
