American Alliance for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance Unifies As One
RESTON, VA, May 8, 2013 – The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) began a new chapter in its 128-year old history recently when its Alliance Assembly (AA) overwhelmingly approved unification (204 approved, 0 opposed, 1 abstained) at its AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Charlotte, NC. As a result, AAHPERD's five national associations, six district associations and its Research Consortium are now one unified organization.
"This is an historic moment in time for our Alliance," said AAHPERD President Gale Wiedow of the Dakota State University in South Dakota. "With unification we are confident that we will be better able to serve the needs of our members by creating a more efficient, effective, member-focused and forward-looking organizational structure."
Our new vision statement is: "Healthy People – Physically Educated and Physically Active!"
Our new mission is: "To advance professional practice and promote research related to health and physical education, physical activity, dance and sport."
At that same meeting the AA elected Dolly Lambdin of the University of Texas at Austin as its new President-Elect. Lambdin joins President Wiedow, Past President Irene Cucina of Plymouth State University and Chief Executive Officer E. Paul Roetert on the AAHPERD Executive Committee.
"Our unified organization will continue to provide innovative and meaningful programs, products and services that our members want, need and expect for the areas of school health, dance, sport, physical education and physical activity," says CEO E. Paul Roetert. "Among those recently added new initiatives are the Presidential Youth Fitness Program and Let's Move! Active Schools – two major projects with national implications and impressive partners."
